What Is The Right Age For Braces?

Dec 11, 2013

If you have kids, you have probably wondered at some point during their childhood: When is the right time to get braces? Well, you are not alone. Many people struggle with deciding when the right time is to straighten their children’s teeth. Some believe it is when they are younger, so they can straighten them at an early age. Others believe that it is better to wait until their child is older and mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with braces. Both of these answers are valid, and in all honesty, there is no exact answer to this question. The president of the American Association of Orthodontists, Dr. Michael Rogers, also believes that pinpointing an age for braces is the wrong approach. He suggests that the type and severity of a child’s bite problem are key in determining the timing of treatment, and those problems vary between children. Here are a few things you can do to better prepare your child for the best orthodontic care possible:

3 Quick Tips

  • Consult with your dentist about orthodontist referrals, they will be able to point you in the right direction, and some dentists, like Dr. Arzegar, are even able to provide orthodontic services in their own office.
  • Do not wait until your child has lost all of their deciduous (baby) teeth before addressing orthodontic care. Your child’s bite may be suitable for adjustment well before they lose all of their baby teeth.
  • Attack the problem right away! The longer you wait, the more damage can be done to your child’s bite.
